Excerpt: ... fell into a trap over this saying, and wrote of the good daggers made at Bridport I THE ALTERNATIVE ROUTE TO DORCHESTER The route-map accompanying this section indicates an alternative route through Wareham to Dorchester, and this may be recommended to those who wish to keep as close to the sea as possible, for from Wareham goes a good road to Corfe Castle, and from thence it is only a few miles to the charming seaside village of Studland. The interests of this route are summarized below. Wareham, a town of great importance in Saxon times, is still surrounded by huge earthworks, which were often attacked by the Danes. Corfe Castle has a charming little grey town clustering round the great conical hill where stand the noble ruins of the fortress which has held this gap in the Purbeck Hills for so many centuries. It is mainly Norman and Edwardian, but has traces of Saxon work. The two chief events connected with Corfe are the murder of Edward the Martyr and the siege during the Civil War, when Lady Bankes and her household successfully held out for the King. Studland has a small Norman church, unaltered and most interesting. Charming cottages nestle under the shade of huge elms, close to the sea, and are surrounded by gorse-land and downs. Bindon Abbey, open every day; entrance, 3d. The bases of the walls...
